At Minnesota Kannada Shaale, we follow the structured and internationally recognized curriculum developed by
Kannada Academy, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting Kannada language and culture among
children and families worldwide. The curriculum is designed specifically for students growing up outside
Karnataka, combining language learning with cultural connection in a fun, engaging, and age-appropriate manner.
Progressive Learning Path
The curriculum is organized into eight levels that gradually build listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills:
Swara Balla (Levels 1–2)
Students are introduced to Kannada sounds, basic vocabulary, simple conversations, and foundational language
skills.
Akshara Balla (Levels 3–4)
Focus shifts to learning the Kannada script, recognizing and writing letters, reading simple words, and
improving conversational fluency.
Pada Balla (Levels 5–6)
Students develop stronger reading and writing abilities, learn sentence construction, read poems and short
passages, and expand their vocabulary.
Jaana (Levels 7–8)
Advanced learners strengthen comprehension, communication, grammar, creative writing, and cultural literacy
while gaining confidence in using Kannada in real-life situations.
Beyond Language Learning
Minnesota Kannada Shaale believes that language and culture go hand in hand. Along with language
instruction, the curriculum goes beyond by helping students:
• Develop pride in their Kannada heritage
• Connect with Karnataka’s rich literature, traditions, and values
• Build confidence in speaking Kannada at home and in the community
• Participate in cultural programs, storytelling, songs, and interactive activities
• Foster lifelong connections to Kannada language and culture
Accreditation and Recognition
The Kannada Academy curriculum is accredited through the Accrediting Commission for Schools of the Western
Association of Schools and Colleges (ACS-WASC), providing a recognized and standards-based framework for
Kannada language education. The curriculum has contributed as a pathway for language proficiency recognition.
At Minnesota Kannada Shaale, our mission is to create a nurturing and enjoyable learning environment where
children can develop strong Kannada language skills while celebrating and preserving their cultural roots for
generations to come.
